Who should use this tool?

There is a wide variety of approaches to Natura 2000 management across the EU. Therefore, this tool is designed for use by all individuals with responsibilities for Natura 2000 management – specialist ecologists, areas managers, people working in Protected Areas, Rangers and private landowners of Natura 2000 sites.

More precisely, it is recommended for the use of individuals who are working for one or more Natura 2000 sites in one of the following situations:

  • staff member of a regional or local entity in charge of the coordination and/or management of one or several Natura 2000 sites,
  • staff member of a site-based Natura 2000 management team dedicated to the management of one or several sites,
  • working for the management team of a nationally/regionally/locally designated protected area overlapping with Natura 2000 designations,
  • staff member of various entities who have Natura 2000 site management related responsibilities / activities (for example if management responsibilities of a site are delegated to your local forestry office)
  • an individual landowner who have management responsibilities deriving from the fact that your land is in a Natura 2000 site.

In terms of levels of responsibilities related to Natura 2000, this tool is helpful to you if you are have responsibilities like those defined for staff levels 2 and 3 from the Competence Register:

    • - Management, organization and leadership of technical sections and teams implementing plans and projects. Completing specific and complex technical assignments (according to technical specialty) - Staff level 2
      Examples of positions: head ranger, PA biologist, education/outreach/ tourism officer
    • - Direction and management of medium-sized organizations. Planning and management of projects and programmes within strategic frameworks. Conducting and leading complex and technical programmes (according to speciality) - Staff level 3
      Examples of positions: PA director, local government / Agency official in charge with PAs , senior PA management team member.
